Carolyn J. Gatz— Biographical Sketch

Carolyn Gatz brings to her role as an independent consultant a strong record of success in designing and implementing complex strategies for community change.

Leading Louisville's Empowerment Zone efforts as a top aide to Mayor Jerry Abramson, she was responsible for attracting more than $100 million in funding, overseeing creation of the Louisville Community Development Bank, the Nia Center "one stop shop" for economic opportunity, and a government reinvention initiative that won an Innovations in American Government Award from the Ford Foundation. She served as a key program designer and member of the management team for the $170 million Park DuValle Revitalization and helped shape Louisville's nationally recognized workforce development.

Ms. Gatz brings strong communications skills and a broad base of knowledge to her work, gleaned from 15 years of as an award-winning journalist and member of the Editorial Board of The Courier-Journal. Selected as a Women's Leadership Fellow, she earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1991.

Ms. Gatz's civic involvement revolves around healthcare, drawing upon her experience working in the White House on national healthcare reform. She serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Norton Healthcare, the largest non-profit in Kentucky, and recently completed a term as Chairman of the Board of University Medical Center Inc., which operates the teaching and indigent care hospital in the Medical Center. She also is a trustee for the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati.
